Center to Host Free “Homeless Dental Clinics”

First of Three Clinics Takes Place at Evergreen Health Center, April 18

Prince William Community Health Center Offers Free Dental Care to HomelessManassas, Virginia, March 31, 2015 – Greater Prince William Community Health Center is again working with the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) and other community partners to provide three “Homeless Dental Clinics” at the Evergreen Health Center, located at 9705 Liberia Avenue, Suite 201 in Manassas. These free clinics are slated to take place April 18, May 16 and June 20. Dates are subject to change; check gpwhealthcenter.org (Services, Dental) for updated information.

“Everybody thinks of dental care as a luxury item, but it is essential to good health,” said Health Center Board of Directors President Paul Moessner. Studies show that the bacteria and inflammation caused by periodontitis can play a role in other diseases, and oral health can be reflective of overall wellbeing.

“There’s a direct link between oral health care and good physical health,” concurred VHCF Executive Director Deborah D. Oswalt. “Unfortunately, many Virginians cannot afford regular trips to the dentist. We are delighted to fund a dentist at Evergreen Health Center to increase the availability of oral health care on a sliding fee scale for many in Prince William County.”

Faith-based and nonprofit organizations such as SERVE (the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Family Services) work with the Center to identify individuals in need, often providing transportation as well.

During last year’s clinics, Center dentists had 30 encounters with 17 patients, performing  services such as cleanings, x-rays, extractions and fillings. These services are valued at more than $12,000. Homeless patients were also eligible for follow-up care as needed.

Community groups working with the homeless are encouraged to contact Center Care Coordinator Amelia Kupchyk at the Center; akupchyk@GPWHealthCenter.org.
